What is the NAR Code of Ethics? This is the doctrine and aspiration set forth by REALTORS over 100 years ago. For the most professional of us, it is a guide to not only how we work but how we live.
The Preamble sets forth the duty to our nation to protect and promote the private property rights of our citizens. Hence, the National Association of REALTORS has one of the largest and most well funded lobby organizations in the country. It is also the most well respected among politicians. It is truly a bi-partisan group focused on the rights of property owners and the availability of affordable property ownership.
The Preamble also promises that REALTORS will follow the Golden Rule not only professionally but in everything they do. It describes our responsibility to be involved in our communities and help them succeed. What is good for a community is good for private property.
The Code of Ethics also contains 17 Articles that detail how a REALTOR should interact with Consumers, Clients and other REALTORS. Each Article is based on integrity and honesty. REALTORS who are found in violation of these Articles can be fined, required to get more education or even lose their REALTOR privileges such as access to Multiple Listing Services.
